Chad Norman

AFTER A DAY OF BIRD WATCHING

The way one stops
to listen to
the quiet of a house
at night,
broken by what sounds
like a meow,
more quiet, then
another meow.

Before looking at
the hour’s red blur,
and rolling back into
the safety of flannel sheets,
the human in the dark
smiles: more than one
family member
is dreaming.
