Gary Beck, Summer 2017

Slow Change

Disruption to the public good
courtesy of nature,
flood, hurricane, earthquake,
tries the spirits of the survivors
who endure inflictions
and rebuild their lives.
This pattern of existence
applied to life
until man evolved
forming tribes, cities, nations,
when humanity produced
enough ills to compete
with natural destruction,
forever altering
the balance of things.

Error of Our Ways

The merchant’s way
has become more important
than the warrior’s way,
replacing the battlefield
with money market yield,
except when profit summons
the dogs of war
to fight, bleed, die,
for greater earnings
in a system gone astray
that does not value wisdom’s way.

The Path of Decay

My country,
land of abundance,
once produced enough
to feed, house, fuel the world,
until capitalism
refused the concept of share,
seekers of profit
always wanting more
immune to the needs of others,
dedicated to acquisition
of pleasures and treasures
consuming so much
the deprived are legions.
The air and water
may be approaching toxic
for mankind planet bound
without an exit plan,
who must hope to endure,
while the few revel,
devouring tomorrows.
