{"id":384,"date":"2011-10-12T02:14:00","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T02:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/crowreviews\/?p=384"},"modified":"2011-10-13T04:04:11","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T04:04:11","slug":"seriously-dangerous-losse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/crowreviews\/2011\/10\/seriously-dangerous-losse\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Seriously Dangerous&#8221;, Helen Losse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/crowreviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/seriouslydangerous.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-393\" style=\"border-width: 2px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;\" title=\"seriouslydangerous\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/crowreviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/seriouslydangerous.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>AND WE HAVE LOST THE FAITH OF THE DAISIES<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em><strong>Seriously Dangerous<\/strong>, by Helen Losse,\u00a0Main Street Rag Press, 2011. \u00a062 pp. Reviewed by Paul Corman-Roberts for Full Of Crow.<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>\u201cWhat shall I make of this hope in the dark?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> What shall I make of this dark in the hope?\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>From \u201cFuneral in the Woods\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>North Carolina poet Helen Losse is well steeped in the American tradition of plainsong so it may shock readers familiar with her style (or that of plainsong poetry or other Main St. Rag authors) to see a burning cross depicted beneath the title of her new collection of poems <em>Seriously Dangerous<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But Losse is no Klansman, or Klanswoman; she is not initiating a rallying cry on behalf of any political scene or in general. \u00a0Her rhetoric has the honest knack for the odd and frequently humorous image which is always strategic, poetic, and also quite slyly placed within her narratives:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPeople with crosses have<\/em><br \/>\n<em> various purposes.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We know most are dangerous,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> except for the chosen few<\/em><br \/>\n<em> God actually likes.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I think not. \u00a0But what do I know?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m just an old soul<\/em><br \/>\n<em> wearing nerdy glasses.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Aren\u2019t most of us rather<\/em><br \/>\n<em> forgettable in the long run?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And maybe if the long run is<\/em><br \/>\n<em> not-so-long.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The earth spins, yes?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Spin, spin, spin,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and we have lost the faith of the daisies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><br \/>\n<em> From\u00a0\u201cSpin, Spin, Spin&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Seriously dangerous images, scenes and ideas are the unifying thread between most of the poems in this book. The excerpt above demonstrates how Losse\u2019s poems aren\u2019t literally dangerous, in the \u201cBurn Baby Burn\u201d sense of danger, but are instead flirting with perceived danger, at times coy and playful, not seeming serious, but then suggesting at just the last moment that we are in fact, always in danger, all the time, whether we like it or not. There is something suggested that the strength we build inside ourselves is based on how well we cope with that fundamental fact of life.This is not to say that there isn\u2019t an awareness of the political in the work. \u00a0Issues of race, war and degradation are deftly handled, but without fetishizing buzzwords or tragedy or even history. It is in this context that the plainsong style works to the advantage of these poems, when they could go off on political or polemic tangents, the rootedness in the Earth, and in Earth language restrains those kind of poetic temptations. \u00a0And while the poems often seem religious, or Pacifist-Christian in tone, there are also in fact many images of raw nature, particular light and color, which hint at a pagan sensibility balancing out the spiritual reflections that are both conflicted and processing within these stanzas:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHymns from a church. \u00a0Bells that always ring<\/em><br \/>\n<em> at dusk. \u00a0The time of year when night comes early.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The setting sun behind ever-green trees,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A forlorn sky becoming heavy blue. \u00a0The horizon<\/em><br \/>\n<em> as it turns pink and mauve, then purple.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It would be easier to speak as others believe,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> not to feel the ocean\u2019s intentions nor to sense<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the pull of the moon. Grace abounds in ocean,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> in flotsam, in rich sea foam, floats in earth\u2019s<\/em><br \/>\n<em> swirling dust, though only in teaspoonfuls.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The cold wind scatters leftover leaves,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>while Daddy\u2019s silhouette plays<\/em><br \/>\n<em> a mean harmonica. \u00a0Timid at first, I dance \u2013<\/em><br \/>\n<em> which is only to say, that which I love<\/em><br \/>\n<em> often comes from memories.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>From \u201cWhere Light is Going\u201d<\/em>It\u2019s not all images from Mother Nature filling in the nuanced and wry details here. Losse\u2019s poems are just as comfortable in a big city setting as they are climbing a rocky mountain outcropping. \u00a0This awareness of dichotomy, of forces at odds with each other, is never far from the surface of any of the poems in this collection. \u00a0At every turn, Losse\u2019s strong but playful hand in shaping the delicate interaction between these forces is a joy to bear witness too. \u00a0Unlike so many poets who remain balkanized within the paradigms of their belief models, the reader gets the sense that Losse welcomes all comers, that her model is fully engage anything the cosmos seems willing to send her way. \u00a0The poet is above all things, a citizen of the universe, and Helen Losse\u2019s delicate renditions of this awareness emphasizes their own quiet intensity in the shared sense of being:<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>\u201cThere is no map, it seems,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> no drawn way. Above me,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the ceiling is murky gray.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Soft moonlight filters throughan open window. \u00a0A pattern begins.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I recognize it from the other nights.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A quarter moon. \u00a0I get into<\/em><br \/>\n<em> a gondola with a man I\u2019ve<\/em><br \/>\n<em>never seen. \u00a0The man becomes<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the moon, the ocean the sky.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The gondola floats among<\/em><br \/>\n<em>cirrus clouds, in and out of soft rain.<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>Then the rain becomes hard,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> hits window glass. \u00a0The man is<\/em><br \/>\n<em> gone, &amp; I am not in the boat.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> There is only the ceiling above me,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>familiar like the sky.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><em>Gondola Ride \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AND WE HAVE LOST THE FAITH OF THE DAISIES &nbsp; Seriously Dangerous, by Helen Losse,\u00a0Main Street Rag Press, 2011. \u00a062 pp. Reviewed by Paul Corman-Roberts for Full Of Crow. &nbsp; \u201cWhat shall I make of this hope in the dark?
