wet bulb depression<\/strong><\/p>\n

heated by the mid-Summer sun,
\nyour van’s panels can scald bare skin,
\neven inside,
\nwhere withering air,
\nhangs among tools and spare parts,
\nand won’t cool for months.<\/p>\n

once this job\u2019s done,
\nyou’ll get back to the baseball scores
\nand that growler of beer,
\nthen another to let you sleep
\nthrough the punishing heat.<\/p>\n

white noise whirs from a swamp cooler.
\nyou know this hallway all too well.
\nits reek of booze and smoke and grease.
\nthe pungent tang of unwashed bodies.
\nthe bangers are new.
\nthe same but new.<\/p>\n

\nthe peep hole viewer\u2019s painted over, again,
\nthe door jamb\u2019s cracked where the deadbolt goes,
\nbut the welcome mat\u2019s still here,
\nand that fried chicken smell.<\/p>\n

she\u2019s the one who answers.
\nshe always is.<\/p>\n

a gash slants across her forehead.
\nher left cheek looks punctured.
\nyou hear that choking sleep apnea snore
\nand take off your shoes.<\/p>\n

she whispers how a bus rattled by
\nlast night, and broke the window.
\nyou notice her turtle neck,
\nthen take out your tape measure,
\nand say nothing,
\nabout the glass shards outside,
