Truth Glass<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shawna I think of you in Seymour
\nin your trailer behind La Siesta
\nwhere in the summer I would hold
\nmy breath paying three dollars
\nto swim in the pool
\nin the office that reeked of curry.
\nTouching the turquoise and royal blue
\ntiled fish on the bottom,
\npretending to be a mermaid
\nwith honeydew tits
\naquamarine hair
\nand purple eyes
\nI believed myself
\nEmpress of Something.
\nYou have never worn a tiara
\nor a ring on the value proving finger
\nyou have never laughed crazy in the Pacific
\ndrunk on moonloss and Mexican beer
\nyou have never held a weeping man
\nor weeping child in your mama arms.
\nI know your mama left you in the crib
\nthat day and never looked back
\nor sent a balloon or a card
\nand I have thought on that
\nas I have watched my son suck
\nhis thumb in his sleep
\nmy heart aching with too much, too much.
\nShawna the glamor I have conjured up
\nthe days I have scratched out
\nfrom my rabbit patch
\nthe magic I have thrown
\nlike candy to the April winds
\nhas not brought the Brazos to my door.
\nThe bones will never be buried
\ndeep enough
\nand the ghosts of those burned down
\nhouses and gas stations
\nwill never let me
\nwipe the mud
\nfrom my feet.
\nYou asked me that day how you looked,
\nyour sad brown dog eyes
\nembellished with cheap blue eyeshadow,
\nthe weight of at least half the world
\nsagging your extra large plain girl shoulders.
\nI felt superior when I lied in a kind tone,
\ntold you that you looked good.
\nMy grandmother cried as we watched you
\nboard the bus for Alabama.
\n“That’s as good as that girl is ever
\ngonna have it,” she said.<\/p>\n

And now
\nall these
\nyears later
\nI can
