{"id":1427,"date":"2012-01-01T23:18:26","date_gmt":"2012-01-01T23:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/?page_id=1427"},"modified":"2012-01-05T01:46:40","modified_gmt":"2012-01-05T01:46:40","slug":"vincent-turner-0112","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/archives\/vincent-turner-0112\/","title":{"rendered":"Vincent Turner, 01\/12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;d kept them prisoner for three days<br \/>\nblaming the relentless applause of rain.<br \/>\nLike cattle at the grills of a gate<br \/>\nthey sat, face against window waiting<br \/>\nfor the clap of water to fade.<\/p>\n<p>Noses smudged against<br \/>\nthe braided pane they argued<br \/>\nour reasoning stating the cows<br \/>\nand their calf&#8217;s that mooched<br \/>\nin the distant fields<br \/>\nspent days in the rain,<br \/>\nbut never sneezed.<\/p>\n<p>On the second morning of captivity<br \/>\nthey agreed in the privacy of their<br \/>\ncell a hunger strike was the only way.<br \/>\nIt began after breakfast, ended<br \/>\nshortly before lunch. We tried games<br \/>\nscrabble and eye-spy but every word<br \/>\nwas a please, a when, or a why.<\/p>\n<p>Mostly they stared at the clouds,<br \/>\nwilling them to end their dark hovering.<br \/>\nHow guilty we&#8217;d felt, watching<br \/>\nthem place bets on rain drops,<br \/>\nthe first to snail<br \/>\nthe window would win. Or at night<br \/>\nwhen from their beds they&#8217;d offer<br \/>\ntheir souls to God, promising never<br \/>\nto argue with each other again.<br \/>\nThe holiday ended as it began<br \/>\nawash with rain and relief.<\/p>\n<p>Many years on it is I who watches<br \/>\nthe heavy crowd of clouds, pacing<br \/>\nthe piss stinking corridors of a<br \/>\nnursing home, waiting for one<br \/>\nof them to call and tell me the<br \/>\ntrip to the seaside is a no go,<br \/>\nas the rain is for the day<br \/>\nand my chest is not what it was.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain We&#8217;d kept them prisoner for three days blaming the relentless applause of rain.
