Virtue<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1.<\/div>\n
Inside the mouth<\/div>\n
of the alligator<\/div>\n
a nameless bird<\/div>\n
pecks away carelessly<\/div>\n
pleasure abound<\/div>\n
as if to call this danger<\/div>\n
mine<\/div>\n
to make a flirtation<\/div>\n
with its newly found<\/div>\n
protecting itself<\/div>\n
against the sun<\/div>\n
burning away at feathers<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
2.<\/div>\n
Alone in the fall<\/div>\n
a doomed rottweiler<\/div>\n
scurries off<\/div>\n
deeper and deeper<\/div>\n
into the rust color<\/div>\n
that still holds tight<\/div>\n
to its coat<\/div>\n
struggling to die somewhere<\/div>\n
in an unknown corner<\/div>\n
far beyond territorial markings<\/div>\n
where others will sniff<\/div>\n
and decide its appropriateness<\/div>\n
for a leg-lifting<\/p>\n

Adolescent<\/p>\n

<\/strong>All day I checked my\u00a0 pockets
\na re-wrapped lollipop,
\nfifty-five cents in change,
\na prayer card to St. Anthony.<\/p>\n

These small things an honor
\nfor a\u00a0 nine-year-old.<\/p>\n

Laying down after exhaustion
\nof summer heat
\nof all\u00a0 of the backyards shuffled through
\nI’d collapse on the floor,
\nlet the mind\u00a0 guide me off into<\/p>\n

someplace even warmer.
\nWorld, wait\u00a0 for me,
\ndon’t do a thing
