Daughter of Tokens<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She says she doesn\u2019t feel like an Indian
\n<\/span>and sometimes people, tourists mostly,
\n<\/span>don\u2019t think she\u2019s an Indian, but when they find out, <\/span><\/p>\n

they want their photo taken with a \u201cwhite one.\u201d
\n<\/span>She says she doesn\u2019t know how to write
\n<\/span>like an Indian, doesn\u2019t know how to talk about <\/span><\/p>\n

eagle-feather-dancing-drums-smoke-sweat-lodge.
\n<\/span>I tell her\u2014maybe it\u2019s because you drive a refurbished
\n<\/span>Honda with a Toyota engine and your regalia <\/span><\/p>\n

is your hoodie and you go berry picking in a hat
\n<\/span>that makes you look Chinese.
\n<\/span>Tonight, there’s a “whoo hoo” celebration <\/span><\/p>\n

(as she calls it)\u2014Native American Month. She puts on
\n<\/span>her best Indian t-shirt, the one that says, \u201cI\u2019m half
\n<\/span>white but I can\u2019t prove it.\u201d She flings her waist-long, <\/span><\/p>\n

dark hair behind her back, pokes the silver labret
\n<\/span>below her lip. She heads for the stage to read
\n<\/span>her poems. She speaks in her dying language\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

tells them she\u2019s a Raven, a Snail; her grandfather’s
\n<\/span>people are Bears and says something about her colonization
\n<\/span>therapy and makes them wonder why their seats <\/span><\/p>\n

just got harder. After, she says to me\u2014reading poetry
\n<\/span>is all about Indian warfare and they don\u2019t even know it.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I read the poem of the same name
\n<\/span>by Sherman Alexie, five days after my friend,
\n<\/span>Andy Hope III, died at 58 from cancer<\/span><\/p>\n

and I thought about what I could do to honor
\n<\/span>what people called Andy\u2019s “politically
\n<\/span>incorrect views” and wondered why <\/span><\/p>\n

we couldn\u2019t buy Sheldon Jackson College
\n<\/span>that used to be a boarding school
\n<\/span>where missionaries swatted our kids <\/span><\/p>\n

for speaking their language, punished
\n<\/span>them just for being\u2014the after-affects
\n<\/span>are still killing off our generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andy and I had conversations like that.
\n<\/span>But I wonder who would visit
\n<\/span>this island in order to walk down <\/span><\/p>\n

Lincoln street past the boat harbor,
\n<\/span>past the Russian Bishop\u2019s House, past the past,
\n<\/span>to pay five or ten dollars to enter <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>and stand beside a picture of Andy grinning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hair Like She Wore It<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My daughter once claimed
\n<\/span>a right to dye her hair green<\/span><\/p>\n

since her grandmother declared
\n<\/span>alien status from another planet.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when she grew up, she dyed it pink
\n<\/span>and the public school questioned <\/span><\/p>\n

her ability to be a foster mother.
\n<\/span>And once she shaved it off;<\/span><\/p>\n

no water at the hatchery barge,
\n<\/span>said salmon slime stuck in it, <\/span><\/p>\n

got tired of picking out the scales.
\n<\/span>Now it\u2019s long, down to her butt<\/span><\/p>\n

where she flips it back
\ns<\/span>o it doesn\u2019t drag in the toilet<\/span><\/p>\n

and the tourists she shows around town
\n<\/span>politely ask to touch her “Indian” hair.<\/span><\/p>\n
