dead wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

they can try to hide
\nthe remnants of us old drunks
\nby putting big screen televisions all over the bar
\nand a fake fireplace in the corner
\nthey can try to mask our leftover odor
\nwith scented candles
\nand the perfume of a dozen trampy women
\nclad in miniskirts
\nclutching their cell phones
\nand squealing at martinis
\nbut the truth is
\nright in that corner
\nis where benny threw a chair at the wall
\nbecause mona had been fucking
\nall of his friends
\nand in that corner
\nis where don used to hold court every night
\nwith his short beer, take-out chinese
\nand whiskey shots
\nand even though the bathrooms work in this joint
\nlike they never did before
\nyou can\u2019t fool us because we know
\nwho snorted what in the men\u2019s room
\nbefore you turned it into the women\u2019s room
\nwe know who fucked whom on the corroded toilet
\nbefore you guys put in those new ones
\nthat don\u2019t stink of decades old vomit and shit
\nso you can go ahead and charge us
\nsix dollars for a pint of colorado piss water
\nto try and keep the lot of us from coming back
\nand you can call it a sports bar all you like
\nbut when we pass by
\nin our heads it\u2019ll still be the same old dive
\nfull of drunken characters and manic saints
\nand even though you put a new coat
\nof gloss on the bar
\nmade it real nice and shiny
\nfor all the new nice and shiny people
\nthat you\u2019ve brought in to dull the place
\nbeyond recognition
\nthe truth of the matter is
\nit ain\u2019t nothing but dead wood in here
\nand dead wood don\u2019t last long
\nbefore it starts to rot.<\/p>\n
