timelessness<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\u00a0Brewster\u2019s Ladies\u2019 Library<\/em>\u00a0started<\/p>\n

by two ladies 150 years ago<\/p>\n

is still going strong. My mother<\/p>\n

volunteers there, holds the record<\/p>\n

for the most volunteer hours worked<\/p>\n

during the year.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI love this place,\u201d she says<\/p>\n

as we leave the book stacks and wander back<\/p>\n

into the newspaper reading room<\/p>\n

with its musty newspaper smell. An old man<\/p>\n

in a heavy brown coat, slouched down<\/p>\n

like a crumpled walrus in a big leather chair,<\/p>\n

doesn\u2019t even glance up from his newspaper<\/p>\n

as we enter the room.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But I can see the slight smile<\/p>\n

as he overhears my mother\u2019s reverent voice<\/p>\n

talking about the library, with its quiet corners<\/p>\n

and sacred spaces. \u201cI love this place,\u201d<\/p>\n

she says again as she takes<\/p>\n

my arm, the color rising in her cheeks.<\/p>\n

My dad would be proud of her I think,<\/p>\n

taking such good care<\/p>\n
