The Subtle Ages\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A sufficiently prolonged mood
\n(months, decades, millennia?)
\nof this type can make
\nextraordinary things possible
\nand ordinary. Like visions of the future.
\nYou need only
\ncorrect for projection
\nof hope, and desire
\nfor some sort of redemption, while not
\npretending you won\u2019t be
\nsurprised. I\u2019m surprised
\nat the general peacefulness.
\nSettlements by the shore,
\noases; one expected
\nthe depopulation. Towns,
\nhomemade schnapps; medium-serious
\nbrawls at the annual fair, swiftly
\nsubdued. Hygiene
\nand science enough to stop plagues.
\nProlonged and obsessively equitable
\ntrade. In one place
\na plaza, with an undersized
\nstone I can\u2019t quite read but feel
\nsomehow is there for my benefit.
\nBut what\u2019s startling
\nis the quiet. Norwegian farmers
\nwould be less laconic.
\nNor is it some hierarchic
\ntraditionalistic punctilio; only,
\nit seems they\u2019d rather do anything
\nthan talk. Or,
\nexcept for sowing and harvest,
\nact. \u201cSpeaking\u201d glances
\nfrom those stolid faces
\nwith the uniformly brown
\nand weathered complexion
\nsay little, though they\u2019re looking right
\nat me whoever they\u2019re talking to
\nor grimly joking with. What aren\u2019t
\nthey saying? What happened?
\nWhat are they ashamed of?<\/p>\n
