Continuity<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m just a dog barking,
\nI tell my wife who’s upset
\nwith my yakking on and on
\nat our weekly meeting
\non a Saturday morning
\nstationed in our recliners
\nfacing forward as if we were
\nin the same row on a plane
\nwith the middle seat empty.<\/p>\n

I tell her eventually
\nany dog will stop barking
\nif you give him a bowl of kibble
\nor let him in the house
\nor find his ball and play fetch.
\nOr do what my mother did
\nwhen I was an infant bawling
\nand woke my father who faced
\nwork as a lineman the next day.<\/p>\n

My mother would get out of bed,
\ngrab her old bathrobe
\nand whisk me to the rocker.
\nEven to this day,
\nmany decades removed,
\nit’s the best solution:
\nPut a breast in my mouth
\nand silence will ensue.
\nEventually I may even coo.<\/p>\n
