I Braid My Daughter’s Hair<\/strong><\/p>\n

 
\nIt’s been a long time
\nbut this morning
\nmy teenage daughter asked me,
\n“Mom, will you braid my
\nhair\u2014one long one in back.”
\nI ran the brush through it,
\nthe thick and wavy forest
\nthat she cultivates
\nand I remembered how
\nmornings when this was
\nmy primary responsibility,
\nhow tangled it would be,
\nand we’d pretend that
\nher hair was a bird’s nest
\nand as I brushed, I’d say,
\n“Oh, there goes a bluebird,
\nand there’s a cardinal.”
\nNever mind that they wouldn’t
\never share a nest.
\nToday, her hair is brushed
\nand ready for my fingers
\nweaving a thick French braid,
\nand though I haven’t made
\nthose cross-over motions
\nin a year of Januaries, bringing in
\nadditional hair with each stitch,
\nthe memory of how to do it
\nis there, like riding a bike or
\nroller skating on a pebbly
\nsidewalk, alive with the joyous
\nnoise beneath my fingers.<\/p>\n

Knickerbocker- Caroline<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>
\nThe bride, Tammy
\nKnickerbocker, has a
\ndegree in nursing
\nand will work
\nin a pediatric
\nsetting. The groom,
\nPatrick Caroline, is
\npursuing a master\u2019s
\nin ancient history.
\nThe parents and
\ntheir spouses will
\nfly in from
\nDallas, San Diego,
\nPortland and Reno.
\nThe bride\u2019s sister,
\nPeggy Knickerbocker, is
\nmaid of honor.
\nThe marriage will
\ntake place in
\nthe shelter of
\nBoyd Park by
\nthe pond. The
\nbride\u2019s brother will
\nofficiate. All friends
\nand family are
\ninvited. Bring a
\nhot dish to
\npass. Guitars welcome.<\/p>\n
