{"id":2486,"date":"2014-04-22T00:04:26","date_gmt":"2014-04-22T00:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/?page_id=2486"},"modified":"2014-04-22T00:04:26","modified_gmt":"2014-04-22T00:04:26","slug":"kenneth-poyner-april-2014","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/archives\/kenneth-poyner-april-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenneth Poyner, April 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Lovers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You are the alligator in my bathtub:<br \/>\nWhat you might eat of me<br \/>\nIs different in this environment<br \/>\nThan if we met in the reed shallows<br \/>\nOf some great lake where children<br \/>\nGo to gig frogs.<\/p>\n<p>Those children plan to gig enough frogs<br \/>\nThat dinner for the whole family &#8211;<br \/>\nA family weary from the bottomless day of tending<br \/>\nAnd herding and washing and gossip<br \/>\nAnd bearing and ceremonial conflict &#8211;<br \/>\nIs gathered with simply one lone sharpened stick:<\/p>\n<p>And then together they disappear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>The Penultimate Interrogator<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/wp-admin\/options-general.php\">\u00a0<\/a><br \/>\nIt is that interrogator\u2019s job<br \/>\nTo ask no questions at all.<br \/>\nHe stands there, brooding,<br \/>\nAs you get used to your little chair.<br \/>\nHe has his arms folded most of the time,<br \/>\nBut occasionally drops them to his sides,<br \/>\nRuns his hands into his pockets. He seems<br \/>\nJust a tad bit flawed, just a tad bit<br \/>\nIncomplete, as though in six months<br \/>\nHe will be considered for promotion<br \/>\nInto a job for which he is not yet<br \/>\nReady. You keep your knees<br \/>\nTogether and lean forward: away<br \/>\nFrom the back of the chair, if you are<br \/>\nA woman; or fold your feet on their toes<br \/>\nWith knees splayed and your back<br \/>\nAgainst the chair\u2019s back as though<br \/>\nTo challenge it,<br \/>\nIf you are a man.<br \/>\nHe knows<br \/>\nThis is how it plays out. Somewhere<br \/>\nHe has seen a training film on the specifics.<br \/>\nYou alternate staring at him with glancing<br \/>\nAt him, and you grip the sides of the chair,<br \/>\nIf you are a woman; cross your arms,<br \/>\nIf you are a man.<br \/>\nHe conserves motion,<br \/>\nLetting his energy out only when it seems<br \/>\nHe will burst. With time<br \/>\nYou wonder if there will be<br \/>\nEnough oxygen in the room<br \/>\nFor the both of you. He does not need<br \/>\nThe water left on the small three legged table<br \/>\nStaged in the corner. He will not need<br \/>\nTo visit the bathroom.
