Just The Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n

skin cancer
\nwalks along Zuma beach
\nat noon<\/p>\n

lung cancer
\ngoes down to the City of Hope lobby
\nto smoke<\/p>\n

bile duct cancer
\nbellies up
\nto Gill’s buffet<\/p>\n

bone cancer
\nrides through Runyon canyon
\non a gravity bike<\/p>\n

at the hint of a cure
\na thin crowd collects
\non Figueroa Street<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mother And Son<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I flew in and spent
\ntwo weeks with the
\nsentient patients
\nwhile she slept nearby
\non a mobile bed<\/p>\n

awake,\u200b she resisted
\nall questions, refused
\nto reply,\u200b shunned
\nher past, shuttered
\n\u200bher earlier life.<\/p>\n

I needed \u200bto hear answers\u200b
\nto get information,
\nbut my request
\nwas tardy by more
\nthan a decade<\/p>\n

a fat madwoman
\nin the next ward
\nbefriended me
\nso I engaged her
\nin animated blather<\/p>\n

It was not the same.<\/p>\n

Bill Yarrow is the author of Blasphemer<\/strong> (Lit Fest Press 2015), Pointed Sentences<\/strong> (BlazeVOX 2012) and four chapbooks.
