{"id":120,"date":"2009-07-29T11:39:06","date_gmt":"2009-07-29T16:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/?p=120"},"modified":"2009-07-29T11:39:06","modified_gmt":"2009-07-29T16:39:06","slug":"catherine-benitez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/2009\/07\/catherine-benitez\/","title":{"rendered":"Catherine Benitez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>make weigh<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Catherine Benitez, August 2009<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>try as he might<br \/>\nhe couldn&#8217;t understand it.<br \/>\nthe gappy outlines<br \/>\nthe smudged detail<br \/>\nmade her suitable<br \/>\nonly at a distance.<br \/>\n&#8220;amateur&#8221; he semi whispered<br \/>\nin an exhale of navajo<br \/>\nwhite. her personality<br \/>\nwas a gallery of imprecise<br \/>\nmanifestos. all anger<br \/>\nwarped into a palpably<br \/>\ndeluded semblance of<br \/>\nnon fiction. her palette<br \/>\nher pattern pairings<br \/>\nher vague ethnic allusions<br \/>\nbetrayed a lack<br \/>\nof education.<br \/>\nof self discipline.<br \/>\nof true understanding.<br \/>\nthe kind that comes from<br \/>\nnumbers and measurements.<br \/>\nher inner pendulum<br \/>\nswished a rhythm more<br \/>\nalike than she had any idea<br \/>\nbut rough shod and oblivious<br \/>\nto its monotonous pathos.<br \/>\nher anecdote<br \/>\ngelatinous. constructed without<br \/>\nstatistical backbone. beginning<br \/>\nmiddle<br \/>\nand end she was<br \/>\nblissfully unaware<br \/>\nof the rules<br \/>\nand so unsure of how<br \/>\nto break them<br \/>\nin a ways that proved<br \/>\nshe knew them<br \/>\nbut hate them<br \/>\nbut love them<br \/>\nas he did. and this was<br \/>\nfuture. this was<br \/>\nwhat is good.<br \/>\nwhat is real<br \/>\nwhat is improvement<br \/>\nover the standard<br \/>\nhe&#8217;d restrained his<br \/>\npen to incremental<br \/>\niambics to protect<br \/>\nto validate the principals<br \/>\nof a perfect system<br \/>\nhe was now the error<br \/>\nbeing erased to make<br \/>\nroom for something larger<br \/>\nwithout dimension<br \/>\nthat creates more questions<br \/>\nthan it answers<br \/>\nthat villainizes each fiber<br \/>\nof the fabric now<br \/>\nsagging off the bones<br \/>\nof a child<br \/>\nstill grunting and wildly<br \/>\nmotioning<br \/>\nits frustrations<br \/>\njust below.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-169\" src=\"http:\/\/fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/cat-benitez-for-foc-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cat is co-owner, editor and art director of the killpoet press.
