\nJack Ohms, August 2009<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n


\n<\/strong>Be grateful to your enemies
\npeople who have done you down;
\npoor teachers
\nbad parents
\ndisloyal friends.<\/p>\n

If you’ve listened well enough
\nyou will know
\nthey didn\u2019t let you down;
\nbut taught you
\nwhat they should have;<\/p>\n

just<\/p>\n

what you needed to know<\/p>\n

fair seed time

\n<\/strong>I\u2019m trying not to claim it as my own,
\nbut damn,
\nit\u2019s a habit I\u2019ve followed all my life;
\nbricking other personalities into the side of my head,
\nthe double doors open
\nletting all the good grain flow in;
\nspewing out again as genuine home-grown product
\nfrom:<\/p>\n

parent,
\nschool friend,
\nnew bicycle,
\nmovie hero,<\/p>\n

(downloading another icon)<\/p>\n

the curve of a good wooden boat
\na bar hero
\na long-hair<\/p>\n

an old wise one,
\nsitting in a room alone for years
\namong fading Nottingham lace,
\nfine bone china fancies,
\nyellowed clippings of the war dead;<\/p>\n

a lake poet,
\neccentric,
\na sculpture<\/p>\n

– for god\u2019s sake –<\/p>\n

not realising
\nmy life’s turned away from my own source
\nto become a liturgy,<\/p>\n

a pissing of priests;<\/p>\n

not knowing<\/p>\n

or even daring to know<\/p>\n

my own roll…<\/p>\n

…left unexposed on a dark-room shelf;<\/p>\n

the broken glass not glinting in the sun,
\nthe seed pod ungerminated
\nsperm dry
\nand the ears of deaf corn, swaying in the marbled grey storm<\/p>\n

unexposed.<\/p>\n

From central England, Jack Ohms now lives in Eastern Finland where he no longer works as a ceramics teacher, but bums along on the dole and occasional part-time employment schemes, giving him time to write.
