Rachel Helm<\/strong> is Full of Crow’s<\/em> Featured Poet for August 2009.\u00a0 I came upon her work by chance when we swapped chaps for the 2009 OW Chap Swap.\u00a0 I was taken by her clear voice and how her small poems lead me to linger and want more.\u00a0 Rachel has the distinction of being Full of Crow’s<\/em> first featured poet.\u00a0 I am proud to present to you the musings of Rachel Helm.<\/p>\n

I<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think, above all, I was most excited about gay
\nneighbors.\u00a0 I try to straddle two worlds, but wind up
\nabandoning one for the other with little more than a
\nphone call.\u00a0 Yes, ma?\u00a0 Hello? No, no babies yet\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

II<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think, above all, I was most excited about the
\nprospect of sex, and breaking things that should have
\nbeen broken long ago.\u00a0 We\u2019d made plans, and although
\nI don\u2019t believe I\u2019d call the event traumatic, I will say I
\nexpected more from you.<\/p>\n

Mama, we could have raised the kids, grown into our
\ngolden years\u2026
\nAin\u2019t nothing doin, Daddy\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

III<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was rumor of a scar.\u00a0 He said he got you to take
\noff your shirt; said he painted on your belly.
\nI said: I wrote a thousand and one sonnets over her
\nshoulder blades and tattooed her spine with wasps.
\n<\/em>He said he didn\u2019t know anything about that, but your
\nribs were mountains and your bellybutton was an
\nocean of breaths and freckles and gooseflesh.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>I drowned lavender before I knew any better.
\nAnd sometimes I can’t hum frequencies –
\nthe likes of which a father
\nis supposed to teach a daughter
\n(but we never quite got to days
\nwhere we both cared).<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>I want to break childhood against bent knee,
\nwhere dreams in ringlets
\nand pigtails are abandoned
\nin ways all but forgotten.<\/p>\n

If I could measure so surely –
\nthe way she did,
\nthe way she does –
\nI would have no need
\nfor these binoculars, which today
\ndo nothing but examine
\nhistory books.<\/p>\n
