Winter
\nClay Carpenter, September 2009<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

in the cold of that day when the storm
\nin his father\u2019s brain closed the roads
\nchoking off commerce and leaving him
\nto navigate his teenage years alone
\nhe drew a roadmap to last 40 years<\/p>\n

delay became his watchword and he
\npushed on under stars accumulating
\nmileage sleeping little to capture minutes
\nforgoing entrees for desserts foraging
\nfor arguments basking in anger doing
\ncannonballs in pools and conversations
\nblowing smoke rings with the best of
\nthem buying brawling working and
\nplaying games as if they were work<\/p>\n

a trip up the Amazon hard labor on a highway
\nthen law school and marriage to a divorcee
\nwith two kids a family prepackaged
\na humanitarian mission to squeeze in
\nbefore the snowflakes silently began
\nto fall in his head, filling gullies, piling on
\nmountainsides, forming layers that whispered
\navalanche.<\/p>\n

Clay Carpenter is a newspaper copy editor in Corpus Christi, Texas. Truth be told, he wishes he could spend eight hours a day writing poems instead of headlines.
