SNOWBIRDS
\nMather Schneider, September 2009<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/em><\/strong>The brightly plumed couple totters off
\nAmerican flight two twenty two from Chicago.
\nThey stretch their wings in the warm Arizona air
\nthen climb into my cab
\nand I take them to their million dollar winter home
\nin the foothills.
\nThey’re about sixty.
\nShe\u2019s never worked, he retired early
\nfrom the family business.
\nThey both sport golf course tans
\nand whitened teeth.
\nThe woman has eye-watering halitosis
\nlike she’s been eating raw lizards,
\nthe man is a pillow-faced imbecile
\nwith white feathers and hollow bones.
\n\u201cI was thinking of tea and sandwiches
\non Thursday,\u201d the woman says.
\n\u201cSounds good,\u201d the man says.
\n\u201cMaybe a guitarist,\u201d she says.
\n\u201cNot that last guy,\u201d he says.
\n\u201cHeavens, no.\u201d
\nThe pioneers tamed the desert
\nfor people like this.
\nWe killed the Indians
\nfor people like this.
\nI drop them at their golden nest.
\nA brass coyote sits on their mailbox,
\nits head thrown to the cast
\niron sun.<\/p>\n

Mather Schneider is a forty year old cab driver in Tucson. He has no college degree and he has won no contests or awards. His poetry has appeared in the small press since 1995, mostly in print, but he has just discovered the world of net zines.
