Nothing in the world flashes<br \/>\nunless it wants something.<br \/>\nTo feed us. To take our money in exchange.<br \/>\nThankfully, the door does open.<br \/>\nThe counter beckons though the waitress<br \/>\ncould care less.<br \/>\nShe reluctantly unfolds<br \/>\nher book of grubby invoices.<br \/>\nThe surly cook sneers in the background.<br \/>\nHe has to flip burgers, warm up the fries,<br \/>\njust when last May&#8217;s Penthouse<br \/>\nis getting good.<br \/>\nThe half-eaten cake under glass<br \/>\nhas seen a lot of customers come and go I figure.<br \/>\nLikewise, the stains on the enamel,<br \/>\nthe cigarette ash on the floor.<br \/>\nBut when you&#8217;re hungry, you&#8217;ll put up with<br \/>\ndirt and dust and hate and anger<br \/>\nand the sight of this Miss Havisham of desserts.<br \/>\nAnd, of course, the coffee tastes like tar.<br \/>\nNot how we like it particularly,<br \/>\nbut how they prefer to serve it.<br \/>\nBesides, it&#8217;s bottomless.<br \/>\nAnd, in this world,<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s where tasteless takes its cue.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-319\" src=\"http:\/\/fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/john-grey-for-foc-136x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>John Grey is an Australian born poet, US resident since late seventies.
