Walter Conley:\u00a0 Bitchcraft, Where We Are Not<\/em><\/p>\n

BITCHCRAFT
\n<\/strong>(For Janelle)<\/div>\n
A woman I once met
\nIntroduced me to some women
\nWho gathered
\nOnce weekly
\nAt a Water Street hotel
\nWith their needles
\nAnd their thread
\nHeavy scents and girly gossip
\nAnd it all seemed rather I don\u2019t know
\nUntil they started sewing
\nUp
\nEach other
\nYes, that\u2019s what I said
\nTogether, I mean
\nIn a ring of screaming needle-point
\nAnd\u2014that cannot be\u2014laughter<\/div>\n
Well, I ran so fast
\nThat I even lost my socks
\nAnd got a splinter
\nFrom the banister
\nThat I still can\u2019t get out<\/div>\n
Sometime later
\nI\u00a0walked into her
\nAnd
\nRightly or wrongly
\nI decided to go stomping back
\nAnd put them
\nIn their place<\/div>\n
I now go back there
\nEvery Tuesday<\/span>
\nAnd almost enjoy the healing
\nQuite as much\u00a0as<\/div>\n
I do feeling
\nThat I\u2019ve found<\/div>\n
A\u00a0cloth embrace<\/div>\n
***<\/div>\n
WHERE WE ARE NOT<\/strong><\/div>\n
You start to ask–<\/div>\n
Then mumble off<\/div>\n
To\u00a0nowhere<\/div>\n
Or somewhere<\/div>\n
That doesn’t wait on<\/div>\n
Breath and desire<\/div>\n
I’m glad you\u00a0do<\/div>\n
You’re not talking<\/div>\n
To me, anyway<\/div>\n
You almost reach<\/div>\n
But can’t–<\/div>\n
And so you turn<\/div>\n
As if to Go<\/em><\/div>\n
Girl<\/em>,\u00a0you either<\/div>\n
Have the answer<\/div>\n
Or don’t really want<\/div>\n
To hear it
\nAnd we\u00a0Damned
\nWell<\/div>\n
Know
\nThat I don\u2019t<\/div>\n
Have\u00a0one to give<\/div>\n

\nI snapped it up with my

\nDollar camera
\nThe tenth shot of
\nTen
\nWhich loaded on the Dell<\/span>
\nApart from the others, the
\nOne
\nAnd only stray
\nAs if it had been taken
\nOn some other day
\nInstead of the weekend
\nThat I saw Hell<\/div>\n
