The Quintessential Language of Bridges <\/strong><\/p>\n

The bridge, impatient for movement
\nLeapt from the riverbank
\nArced high, deft as a diver
\nor acrobat.\u00a0 I rode<\/p>\n

the center grip, appalled.
\nBridges are for crossing.
\nIt decided to cross the void
\njealous of the freedom<\/p>\n

of downflow,
\nSensing my fear
\ncormorant whispers whistled
\nthrough knot holes.<\/p>\n

Bridge denied the other side
\nsatisfaction; decided
\nto ride memories of longing.
\nI went down with the ship,<\/p>\n

My old life whistled past.
\nBridge became swan.
\nI lost hold, irreversible
\ninvitation to vertical realities.<\/p>\n

I tasted the Seine, measured
\ndescent by drought scars
\ndigesting the depth of tears.
\nWater planet rulers<\/p>\n

hold no quarter for children
\ndressed in denial.
\nChesapeake Bay:\u00a0 bridge as causeway
\nstraddles the tides<\/p>\n

begs my car tires for a kiss
\nthe entryway to all
\nbanished emotions
\nfathoms as favors
\nremaindered from the Barnacle King<\/p>\n

and Pearl Queen offered
\noctaves of cello,
\nthree heartbeats stashed
\nin a seashell stolen<\/p>\n

from the Baltic,
\na sacrament –
\nprelude to breaking
\nthe surface.<\/p>\n
