{"id":709,"date":"2010-01-02T00:05:56","date_gmt":"2010-01-02T05:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/?p=709"},"modified":"2010-01-02T00:05:56","modified_gmt":"2010-01-02T05:05:56","slug":"burgess-stanley-needle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/2010\/01\/burgess-stanley-needle\/","title":{"rendered":"Burgess Stanley Needle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>ONLY GOOD NEWS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Creeping charleys crouch near dwarf cactus<br \/>\nColeus bow to jades<br \/>\nAll bathed in fluorescence<br \/>\nas I sway and weave my stories<br \/>\nto faces that will never be smoother<br \/>\nOr radiate more hope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Belvin, a Mescalero Apache, traveled<br \/>\nfar from the home to water<br \/>\nmy counter\u2019s greenery.<br \/>\nHe fails \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0every subject.<br \/>\nAlways breaks \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0eye contact.<br \/>\nYou like my plants, I stated.<br \/>\nYours? \u00a0One calm word hinted doubt.<br \/>\nWithin the quiet canyons formed<br \/>\nby walls of books his gentle<br \/>\nvoice colored a vision of weather.<br \/>\nThere are no clouds in the west<br \/>\na whisper to the jades.<br \/>\nA cool breeze settles on the hills<br \/>\nnodding to the cactus.<br \/>\nEvery leaf, stalk and spine seemed poised<br \/>\nfor his farewells:<br \/>\nStay healthy, Ramon.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll miss you, Se\u00f1or Ruiz.<br \/>\nThe world will know your story, Belvin<br \/>\nhe says just grazing a blushing coleus.<br \/>\nOnly then does he step<br \/>\nfrom shade to light<br \/>\nprepared to address<br \/>\nThe sun<br \/>\nlonely for her lost children.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nCOMMUNITY OF MEN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He appeared one evening<br \/>\nAlongside the scent of kerosene<br \/>\nlanterns and groaning wooden carts<br \/>\none quite old Japanese visitor<br \/>\nWhat were the unwritten laws of the village?<br \/>\nThe English language side of his card read<br \/>\nSocial anthropologist<br \/>\nBecause he knew his death was imminent<br \/>\nhe feared idle time<br \/>\nthe waste of social amenities<br \/>\nThe Thais were not impressed<br \/>\nBuddhism offered more than a few lifetimes<br \/>\nThey knew he used his daughter<br \/>\nas a lure to connect \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0find a way in<br \/>\na village\u2019s delicate web<br \/>\nWith my bumbling language skills<br \/>\nand what I prayed were polite<br \/>\nentreaties he got to meet the elders<br \/>\nNot the mayor or selectmen<br \/>\nNot the chief or the general<br \/>\nBut the old men who kept the pulse<br \/>\nand guided commerce and all<br \/>\ngraces without a scrap of paper<br \/>\nan oath or salary<br \/>\nThe visitor wheedled and cajoled<br \/>\nThe old men yawned<br \/>\nRice was served and eaten<br \/>\nBeer was poured and finished<br \/>\nGlancing my way the visitor grimaced<br \/>\nWhere can I \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0he used a familiar gesture<br \/>\nEveryone in the small hut rose as one<br \/>\nto troop outside \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0stand at parade rest<br \/>\nby a long row of banana trees<br \/>\nSpraying the greenery until the last man turned<br \/>\nBack inside they readily shared what they could<br \/>\nwith the man an elder described as<br \/>\nbeing able to pee as long as an elephant<\/p>\n<p><strong>IT\u2019S NOT DOMESTIC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not Peets coffee I wish<br \/>\nTo share nor common drags<br \/>\nFrom an herbal smoke<br \/>\nPatois of media suggests<br \/>\nWe Lovers betray<br \/>\nour bond through joint acts<br \/>\nAs if we all must<br \/>\nInhale and grin<br \/>\nSip and smile<br \/>\nPoint is<br \/>\nit\u2019s not domestic<br \/>\nAs in you wash I dry<br \/>\nWhat I miss is<br \/>\nArt<br \/>\nThe design formed by your line-of-sight<br \/>\nChanging my space from X2 to X3<br \/>\nUnderstand<br \/>\nIt\u2019s depth I yearn for<br \/>\nUnless you\u2019re here<br \/>\nI\u2019m trapped flat between<br \/>\nA billion quarks and oxygen<br \/>\nCoffee gulps and clouds of smoke<br \/>\nI\u2019m incomplete<br \/>\ncool to touch<br \/>\nAn existential being<br \/>\nI float on jazz<br \/>\nSwim through sound waves<br \/>\nStrung out like a high-C whistle<br \/>\nI call you<br \/>\nAnd call you<br \/>\nTo make me real<\/p>\n<p>Burgess Stanley Needle is a Tucson, Arizona poet.
