I am spent,
\nmostly by myself,
\nalthough best lied to
\nplans played a part.<\/p>\n

For years I\u2019ve been
\npicking at the hem
\nof my skin, slowly
\nscaling it\u2019s better days<\/p>\n

never thinking that once
\nundone, that\u2019s the way
\nit stays, pieces once
\nsewn together in place<\/p>\n

where they were born,
\nsome stay, others visit,
\nbut it\u2019s been so long
\nI\u2019ve lost the way back,<\/p>\n

my skin once knew,
\nit\u2019s youthful grin
\nbefore the stains,
\nits handsome hair<\/p>\n

when there was still
\nsome there, and a rosy
\nbloom that then drew
\ncloser to grey<\/p>\n

whilst I was busy
\nbuilding a grand
\nfa\u00e7ade to daydreams,
\nI called it anticipation,<\/p>\n

expectation, deserved
\nreconciliation, but really
\nunderneath it was
\nthe flesh of folly,<\/p>\n

how quickly the baby
\nfat goes down to the bone,
\nsuch poking pillows
\nunder a balding pate<\/p>\n

and now, that monolith
\nI began so long ago
\nhas come down
\nto the modest mole<\/p>\n

hill of me, it\u2019s cramped
\nand closing down,
\nbusiness done
\nfor the day and the till<\/p>\n

cashed out to sleep
\non the lumpy couch,
\nand wait for inevitable<\/p>\n

collectors.<\/p>\n

\npoems VS. was released in October 2008 by Erbacce Press. He is also the founding editor of the tiny poetry press, Grievous Jones. When he isn\u2019t writing he is battling against his raging sobriety and trying to live up to the high moral expectations of husbandhood, fatherhood, and humanhood. Not necessarily in that order and not necessarily succeeding.<\/p>\n
