{"id":755,"date":"2010-04-12T18:28:49","date_gmt":"2010-04-12T23:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/?p=755"},"modified":"2010-04-12T18:28:49","modified_gmt":"2010-04-12T23:28:49","slug":"regina-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fullofcrow.com\/poetry\/2010\/04\/regina-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Regina Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Poet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(in the manner of Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird <\/strong><strong>by Wallace Stevens)<\/strong><br \/>\n1.<br \/>\nAcross the cluttered desk,<br \/>\nThe only still thing<br \/>\nWas the brow of the poet.<\/p>\n<p>2.<br \/>\nI was of two camps,<br \/>\nLike a smoky cafe<br \/>\nIn which there are two poets.<\/p>\n<p>3.<br \/>\nThe poet kicked at the wastepaper basket.<br \/>\nIt was a necessary part of the ritual.<br \/>\n4.<br \/>\nA pen and paper<br \/>\nAre comrades.<br \/>\nA pen and a paper and a poet<br \/>\nAre comrades.<\/p>\n<p>5.<br \/>\nI do not know which to lust after,<br \/>\nThe subtlety of Oliver<br \/>\nOr the subtlety of Kenyon,<br \/>\nThe poet emulous<br \/>\nOr just at odds.<\/p>\n<p>6.<br \/>\nRain pelted the mirrored macadam<br \/>\nWith fussy punctuation.<br \/>\nThe cloak of the poet<br \/>\nErased it, back and forth.<br \/>\nThe sneer<br \/>\nTraced in the cloak<br \/>\nAn undeniable fizzle.<\/p>\n<p>7.<br \/>\nO hip folk of Greenwich Village,<br \/>\nWhy do you select pristine poets?<br \/>\nDo you not see how the poet<br \/>\nPronounces up and down the street<br \/>\nOf the madness inside him?<\/p>\n<p>8.<br \/>\nI discern sweet rhymes<br \/>\nAnd rushed, avant-garde language;<br \/>\nBut I discern, too,<br \/>\nThat the poet is privy<br \/>\nIn what I discern.<\/p>\n<p>9.<br \/>\nWhen the poet ran out of words,<br \/>\nIt heralded the end<br \/>\nOf one of many Friday nights.<br \/>\n10.<br \/>\nAt the parade of poets<br \/>\nReveling in a heady spotlight,<br \/>\nEven the gods of prose<br \/>\nWould bow down willingly.<\/p>\n<p>11.<br \/>\nShe hitchhiked to Montana<br \/>\nIn her short skirt.<br \/>\nDaily, a wind blew through her,<br \/>\nIn that she perceived<br \/>\nThe different makes of cars<br \/>\nFor poets.<\/p>\n<p>12.<br \/>\nThe hand is caressing.<br \/>\nThe poet must be writing.<\/p>\n<p>13.<br \/>\nIt was quarter past all day.<br \/>\nIt was raining<br \/>\nAnd it was going to rain.<br \/>\nThe poet made love<br \/>\nIn the back bedroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>tubercular<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><br \/>\ni am blonde<br \/>\nand tubercular<br \/>\nmy lungs like<br \/>\npretty purses<br \/>\nfull of angry coins<\/p>\n<p>i am well known in<br \/>\nsanatorium circles<br \/>\ni slink through<br \/>\nsilver hallways<br \/>\nmy serrated breath<br \/>\nsing-songing<br \/>\nthrough<br \/>\na somnolent sunrise<\/p>\n<p>i wear white<br \/>\ni brush my hair twice a day<br \/>\ni stare past a window<br \/>\nand into the weeping tree<br \/>\noverlooking a lake<br \/>\nthat harbors<br \/>\nevery hesitant newcomer<\/p>\n<p>i am not one of them<br \/>\ncursing the very air<br \/>\nmy alveoli do a jig<br \/>\nand whisper<br \/>\nfrivolous words like<br \/>\nhoneycomb<br \/>\ngaloshes<br \/>\nsafari<br \/>\nand tax evasion<\/p>\n<p>i may not be one of them<br \/>\nbut i don&#8217;t want to leave them<br \/>\nwe pack ourselves in<br \/>\nemaciated rats<br \/>\npet-like<br \/>\nwe run up each others shoulders<br \/>\nwhiskers like feelings<br \/>\ntails like a drawing room<br \/>\nfull of<br \/>\nheavy wine<br \/>\nand cigarette ash<\/p>\n<p><em>Regina Green is a poet and therapist living in Marietta, GA.
