a panther who eats in a restaurant
\noh to be swiped by her paw
\nwhose claws never show
\na padded, velvet push!
\nto feel her hot breath on my neck
\ni turn the other cheek.

\nYear of the Horse<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your hip, a heavy-bodied arch in moonlight,
\nmy arms pass over, press to this bare chest.
\nI slide over the curve, eyes round, ears alert.
\n <\/em>
\nBy noon our hands thicken working wild
\nsoil into our dusk of a chosen domesticity\u2014
\nyour hip, a heavy-bodied arch in moonlight,
\n <\/em>
\nBy dawn our throats thirst for tea steaming
\nfrom mint leaves that escape blackberry roots.
\nI slide from your curve, eyes round, ears alert.
\n <\/em>
\nNow far from fields veined in clay and human ash,
\nwe leave a thought in each shoot we plant\u2014
\nyour hip, a heavy-bodied arch in daylight,
\n <\/em>
\nAn army manual warns that for every ten percent
\nof a people killed, seventy years of grief.\u00a0 I slide
\nover our curve of time, eyes round, ears alert.
\n<\/em>
\nThis year we plant raspberries, and wonder
\nwhat it could mean to predate the wheel.
\nYour hip, an unharnessed arch in moonlight,
\nI slide over your curve, eyes round, ears alert.<\/p>\n
